Mobile Voip - Speex and iLBC
The worldwide explosion of Android and iPhone devices is creating new opportunities for VoIP service providers. The spread of these powerful handheld computers, combined with the availability of open SIP clients (such as Fring, SIP Droid and Whistle), means that every smartphone user is a potential VoIP customer.
Some obstacles still remain to be overcome however. Limited CPU power, battery life, and bandwidth capacity issues make it difficult for these devices to use the standard VoIP codecs that most VoIP carriers support - namely g.729 and g.711. In fact, most of the SIP clients available for iPhone and Android do not even offer these codec options, instead relying on the codecs Speex and iLBC due to their superior performance in terms of CPU and bandwidth consumption.
